About
Daugava Vanagi (DV) is a Latvian charity organization that operates in several countries around the world - in Latvia, USA, Canada, Great Britain, Germany and Australia. The origins of the organization can be traced back to the refugee camps of Latvian soldiers (i.e. legionnaires) in Europe in 1945, when it was created to support soldiers and their families, which we still do today.
The Daugava Vanagi in the United States of America (DV USA) was founded in 1950. After that, separate associations are formed in larger cities where refugees from Europe emigrated, including Colorado. The scope of activities of the DV USA organization expanded to include nurturing Latvian patriotism, caring for compatriots, as well as preserving the Latvian language and traditions outside of Latvia. Newly formed Latvian churches and congregations together with DV associations, folk dance groups, sports groups and other cultural interest groups formed the Latvian exile society.
In today's diaspora, we divide the activities of DV USA into three defined strategic sectors - Latvia, Care and Society.
The Colorado Daugavas Vanagi continue to hold two events each year: The Kurzemes Cietoksnis (The Kurland Fortress) Remembrance Day (May 8th) and Lāčuplēšu Diena (November 11th).
